There are more types of depression; some of them are hereditary, suggesting a biological vulnerability passed from generation to generation. Most often, this situation is encountered in bipolar disorders cases. Research in this matter indicates that people within the same family, suffering from bipolar disorders, present a slight difference in their genetic makeup from the members with no illness. Yet, persons that show genetic difference are not necessary suffering from depression. There are some additional factors that have to contribute for encountering the condition, like stress caused at school, or work, or at home.
In many cases, major depression appears as a genetic legacy but it is possible for people that had no cases of depression in their family to encounter this disorder. Not taking into consideration whether it is genetic or not, this disorder is associated to some structural brain changes or brain function changes.
People who are prone to depression have a low self – esteem, are pessimists and are readily overwhelmed by stress. It was not established whether this represents a psychological predisposition to the condition or an early form of it.

Depressive illness is linked to the medical disorders one can encounter such as stroke, heart attack, Parkinson, hormonal diseases or cancer, making the sick person apathetic and unwilling to care for himself. Depressive episodes can be triggered by any undesired change in one's life like a serious loss or a financial problem, a relationship problem. The depressive disorder can be achieved after a combination of physical, psychological and environmental factors.
