Atypical depression
This is also a subtype of the major form of depression that people show. This type of depression is become more frequent and common among people now a day. People suffering from atypical depression show the symptoms of normal depression. The only difference is that they just respond to negative situations in a positive way but when they face extreme difficult situations they fall deep into depressed and stressful states. They do enjoy being with friends and even family members but they fall victim of loneliness whenever they are left alone. These people always search for positive feelings in life but still they are scared of depressive feelings and loose control over them thus falling into depression.
People who are suffering from atypical depression show symptoms which aren’t normal as the major depression these are:
1)There is an increase in the person’s appetite who is suffering from atypical depression.
2)There is a significant increase in the sleep of the person suffering from atypical depression; this condition is known as hypersomnia.
3)There is lack of social feelings and person withdraws himself from family issues. This might result in drawback from the family and other members and even makes the person irrelevant of social issues.
In a study done in the year 1988, by Dr. Andrew Nierenberg the number of person he researched upon for depression out of them 42% showed atypical depression and 12% were suffering from melancholic depression. And there were 14% people who showed symptoms of both type of depressions.
There have been more studies that have shown atypical depression occurs at a younger age than other forms of depression. There are chances that people who suffer from atypical depression might also suffer from other serious forms of depression, this type of depression is common among both sexes but women are more prone to such effects. The cases in women are 70% more than in men.
There are researches that are going on about the medicines that are available for atypical depression. Doctors are working hard to get a solution for this problem. MAOIs such as Nardil are working fine in treating atypical depression. The newer SSRI medications are also good in treating this disorder.
